Ndithini Vocational School
Built by the community, for the community’s young people. Opened June 2026.
A different path, close to home.
Not every student continues to secondary school. Some do not pass the national exams, and many more cannot afford the fees. In a society where formal education drives hiring, these young people are too often left with early marriage, house work or day labour as their only paths.
In 2022, the community decided to build a different path: a vocational school close to home, where young people can train, certify and earn.
Less than two years from ground to opening.
Ndithini Vocational School opened in June 2026, less than two years after construction began, a record pace made possible by the community itself. A local committee oversaw the project. Community members worked as builders. Women cooked meals for the crews. A well-known marathoner from the community committed the water used for construction. Every milestone was celebrated.
The school offers short courses in trades such as tailoring, welding and carpentry, each leading to a certificate that can secure a job or start a business. Donated sewing machines are already in place.
Certification is under way.
The committee is completing government inspections and certifications and finalising the curriculum and daily operations. Courses begin as each certification lands.
More trades, more certifications, a first graduating class.
The community is also exploring how this building can serve younger children in the future.
