Local Leadership Support
Lasting change is carried by local hands. We invest in the teachers and community leaders who do the carrying.
Buildings and books matter. But people make a school.
SMG’s deepest investment is professional development for the leaders the community already trusts: its teachers and its local leaders. They set the direction. We resource their growth.
Key strands
01 · Teacher development
Teachers at Kiteta Primary have received teaching materials chosen for their actual classrooms: atlases, English and Kiswahili dictionaries, wall charts for every class, and printing paper for homework and exams. A furnished staff room gives them a place to plan, meet and grade. A teacher stipend, one of the most requested forms of support, honours the extra hours they give, including the after-dark exam tutoring the school’s electricity made possible.
The results show. Exam scores have improved, and Kiteta students now test into national secondary schools.
02 · Community Leader Development
Leadership in Kiteta extends beyond the school walls. SMG supports professional development for local pastors and lay leaders from the surrounding community, the same people who convene parents, organise committees and hold the community’s trust.
In 2025, thirty-five community leaders attended a leadership conference on the qualities of a leader, run alongside six members of the visiting United States team. Investing in their growth strengthens every project the community takes on.
Grow the stipend, widen the training.
Growing the stipend program, expanding training resources for teachers, and building out professional development as the model extends to new communities.
